5th Sunday of Easter

by Deacon Oscar Cervantes  |  05/03/2026  |  From the Clergy

We commonly hear this Gospel reading at funerals, as it reminds us of Jesus’ promise to prepare a place for us for the time when we go to Him.

In truth, while it certainly serves as a reminder, it is meant more for all of us—urging us to remain attentive—for, much like Thomas, we too harbor certain questions as we walk our journey of faith. Jesus is clear and concrete in reminding us that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life; and that the dwelling place He is preparing for us in the Father’s house can be reached only through Him.

Over the past four Sundays of Easter, He has been explaining this to us in the wake of His Resurrection: first, by showing us that He is alive; next, by walking alongside us and setting our hearts ablaze as we listened to Him speak; and then, on this past Sunday, by letting us know that He is the Shepherd who guides us—the very Gate through which we may enter the Father’s Kingdom.

Brothers and sisters, if we harbor doubts or feel confused, it is only natural. Remain attentive, just as the Apostles did, for He will soon fulfill the final promise He makes to us this Easter season: to send us the Holy Spirit, who will strengthen us in our faith, enable us to remain attentive to His voice, and allow us to be guided in our lives.

Always remember: if the Lord is your Shepherd, you shall lack nothing—for He is a God who remains faithful to His promises.
