Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

A principios de este mes escuchamos estas palabras sobre la Solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María: "Por hoy ha sido elevada al cielo la Virgen Madre de Dios, anticipo e imagen de la perfección, que alcanzará tu Iglesia, garantía de consuelo y esperanza para tu pueblo, todavía peregrino en la tierra. Con razón no permitiste, Señor, que conociera la corrupción del sepulcro aquélla, que, de un modo inefable, dio vida en su seno y carne de su carne a Tu Hijo, Autor de toda vida." ¡María es la Madre del Autor de toda vida! Ella, criatura, llevó en su seno a su Creador. Ella, la humilde y fiel Hija del Padre y Esposa del Espíritu Santo, dio a luz a Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, Aquel que es la Vida, la Verdad y el Camino.

Como proclama el Salmo de hoy, María, Madre de la Vida, es "el honor más alto de nuestra raza", la Inmaculada Concepción, cuyo vientre protegió y nutrió a Aquel que ha santificado la vida humana. La Encarnación ha unido su divinidad con nuestra humanidad, así, Dios se ha unido al género humano, y Nuestra Señora ha servido como Santuario de la Esperanza para el mundo. Escuchamos en el Evangelio cómo María ordena a su Hijo que realice su primer signo como Mesías en las Bodas de Caná.

Este milagro señala hacia el Banquete Nupcial Celestial del Cordero, anunciado por profetas y llevado a su plenitud por el Mesias. Esta es la revelación de la Vida en toda su plenitud. ¡Una vida llena "hasta el borde"! ¡Completa! Después, es en el Gólgota, Monte Calvario, donde encontramos el Árbol de la Vida; la Nueva Eva, María; y el Nuevo Adán, Jesús. Nuestra Señora permanece de pie al pie de la Cruz, el Árbol de la Vida; y su Hijo está clavado y suspendido en ese Árbol de la Vida entre el cielo y la tierra.

El Autor de la Vida ofrece su propia vida humana por amor a nuestras vidas, redimiéndonos y salvándonos de aquello que amenaza la vida humana: el pecado y la muerte. Es el Misterio Pascual. Cristo ha muerto. Cristo ha resucitado. ¡Cristo volverá! El obispo Robert Barron lo expresa bien: "El Dios de Israel, el Dios de Jesucristo, es un Dios de vida, un Dios de los vivos. Él aborrece la muerte y los caminos de la muerte. El misterio de Jesús está centrado en su triunfo de la vida sobre la muerte: su Resurrección. En otras palabras: ¡su ministerio es un ministerio de vida!"

Como vemos en nuestros días: "Cuando una sociedad se obsesiona con promover una cultura de muerte, manifiesta un desprecio total por la vida y la dignidad humana, lo cual no traerá bendición alguna sobre nosotros". Como se ha dicho, es necesario despertar a las personas a la realidad de que “la justicia social comienza en el vientre materno". El pecado del aborto rechaza la verdad de que la vida es un bien y un don que tiene su origen en Dios, un regalo perfecto que merece protección. Esto nos lleva al punto fundamental: "Quitar la vida nunca es la solución a los problemas de nuestra cultura”. No debemos sucumbir a la influencia del mal, sino permanecer fieles al don de vida que Dios nos ha dado.

Con la gracia y misericordia de Dios, debemos acompañar a quienes desean salir de la oscuridad del aborto, guiándolos hacia la sanación, el bienestar y la reconciliación con Dios, consigo mismos y con sus hijos no nacidos. Nuestras oficinas diocesanas de Vida y Dignidad Humana y Matrimonio y Vida Familiar pueden ayudar a las personas orientándolas hacia programas como Viñedo de Raquel (Rachel’s Vineyard) y Proyecto Raquel (Project Rachel). Para quienes eligen dar a luz y se encuentran en una situación de extrema necesidad, la Iglesia está presente para acompañarlas mediante programas de apoyo como "Caminando con las Mamás" (Walking with Moms).

Cuando es necesario, nosotros, como Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia, estamos llamados a acompañar tanto a la madre como al hijo después del nacimiento. Que continuemos orando y defendiendo la santidad y el don de la vida, nacida y por nacer, especialmente ahora que nos preparamos para octubre, el Mes del Respeto a la Vida. Encomendemos todo a la Divina Misericordia de Jesús y al Inmaculado Corazón de María, Madre de la Vida.

Al concluir, volvemos a la imagen de las Bodas de Caná y pidamos que nuestros corazones y nuestras almas sean llenados “hasta el borde" con la gracia y la misericordia de Dios, mientras perseveramos como fieles discípulos del Autor de la Vida. Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación, ruega por nosotros. Nuestra Señora Madre de la Iglesia, ruega por nosotros. ¡María, Madre de la Vida, ¡ruega por nosotros!

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Earlier this month we heard these words on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: “For today, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed to heaven as the beginning and image of your Church’s coming to perfection, and a sign of sure hope and comfort to your pilgrim people; rightly you would not allow her to see the corruption of the tomb since from her own body, she marvelously brought forth.

Your incarnate Son, the Author of all life.” Mary is the Mother of the Author of all life! She, creature, bore her Creator! She, the humble and faithful Daughter of the Father, and Spouse of the Holy Spirit, gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God, he who is the Life, the Truth, and the Way. 

As today’s Psalm proclaims, Mary, Mother of Life, is “the highest honor of our race,” the Immaculate Conception, whose womb protected and nourished He who has sanctified human life. The Incarnation has wedded his divinity with our humanity, thus God uniting himself with the human race, and Our Lady serving as the Sanctuary for the Hope of the world.

We hear in the Gospel, how Mary bids her Son to perform his first sign as the Messiah at the Wedding Feast of Cana. This miracle points toward the Messianic Heavenly Wedding Feast of the Lamb. This is the revelation of Life to the fullest. Life filled “to the brim!” Complete! Then, it is on Golgotha, Mount Calvary, that we find the Tree of Life; the New Eve, Mary; and the Second Adam, Jesus. Our Lady standing at the foot of the Cross, the Tree of Life; and her Son fastened, hanging on that Tree of Life suspended between heaven and earth.

The Author of Life, sacrificing his life for the sake of our lives. Redeeming and saving us from that which threatens human life: sin and death! It is at the Sacrifice of the Mass where all of this comes together.

The Paschal Mystery. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again! Bishop Robert Barron expresses it well:

“The God of Israel, the God of Jesus Christ, is a God of life, a God of the living. He hates death and the ways of death. The Ministry of Jesus is centered in his triumph of life over death- his Resurrection. In other words: His ministry is a ministry of life!”

As we see in our day and age: “When a society is fixated upon promoting a culture of death, it will manifest the total disregard for human life and dignity, which will not bring blessings upon us.” As it has been said, people need to be awakened to the reality: “that social justice begins in the womb.”

The sin of abortion rejects the truth - life is a good and a gift that finds its origin in God - a perfect gift that deserves protection. This brings us to the bottom line: “Killing is never the solution to address our culture problems.”

We must not succumb to the influence of evil, but remain true to God‘s gift of life. With God‘s grace and mercy, we must accompany those who desire to rise out of the darkness of abortion by leading them to healing and well-being, reconciliation with God, themselves, and their unborn. Our diocesan offices: Life and Dignity and Marriage and Family Life can assist individuals by directing them to such programs as: Rachel‘s Vineyard and Project Rachel.

For those who choose to give birth, and may find themselves in desperate need, the Church is there to accompany them by means of outreach programs, such as “Walking with Moms.” When necessary, we, as the Body of Christ, the Church, are called to be with mother and child after birth. May we continue to pray and uphold the sanctity and gift of life, born and unborn, especially now as we prepare and anticipate October, the Month of Respect Life. 

May we entrust all to the Divine Mercy of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Life. As I close, let us return to the image of the Wedding Feast of Cana, and pray that our hearts and souls be “filled to the brim” with God’s grace and mercy as we persevere as faithful disciples of the Author of Life! Our Lady of the Annunciation, pray for us. Our Lady Mother of the Church, pray for us. Mary, Mother of Life, pray for us!
