The Parable of the Vineyard
by Deacon José Reyes | 10/04/2026 | From the ClergyThis parable of the landowner who planted a vineyard teaches us that God holds us accountable for the blessings that have been bestowed on us. To put it bluntly, God expects some return on the investment he makes in our lives. All God asks is that we give something back to the kingdom of God.
Before we talk about giving something back to God, we need to ask ourselves: do I accept that everything I have is a gift from God? Or do I think that everything I have has been earned with my own effort and nothing has been given to me by anyone else but myself?
Let there be no mistake, everything we are and everything we have is a gift from God. By acknowledging this, we can then reflect on what am I giving back to God in thanksgiving for what He has given me.
In the gospel, we heard that “he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce”, what are we going to give Him when He comes?
We have been entrusted with so much, our family, our marriage, our children, our faith, our community, our Church. What have we done to produce fruits that are pleasing to the Lord? Do I generously share my time, my talents and my treasure in proportion to what I have received? Have I forgiven those who have offended me? Do I consistently spend time talking with God in prayer?
Be prepared, says the Lord, for at an hour you do not expect the Son of Man will come.
