According to the first century Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, Solomon was only 14 years old when he became the king of Israel. In today’s First Reading, Solomon assents to this fact calling himself “a mere youth.” He admitted that he did not know at all how to act. He humbly acknowledged his inefficiency and inexperience repeating what the great leaders of Israel like Moses (cf. Numbers 27:17) and David (cf. 1 Samuel 5:2) did.

En la primera lectura de hoy, Salomón confirma este hecho describiéndose a sí mismo como «un joven». Admitió que no sabía en absoluto cómo actuar. Reconoció humildemente su incapacidad y falta de experiencia, haciéndose eco de lo que habían expresado grandes líderes de Israel como Moisés (cf. Números 27, 17) y David (cf. 1 Samuel 5, 2).

Matthew 13:24-43
A man recently told me he was losing patience with the Church. “It’s supposed to be God’s Kingdom on earth,” he said, “but it’s full of contradictions and hypocrisy. Why can’t the Church just be better?” That last word landed with a judgmental thud. It hurt. Because at times the Church can look painfully ordinary, even disappointing.

El Papa Francisco, de feliz memoria, decía lo siguiente con referencia a las parábolas enseñadas por Jesús a sus oyentes: “Jesús, cuando hablaba, usaba un lenguaje sencillo y también imágenes, ejemplos tomados de la vida cotidiana, para poder ser comprendido fácilmente por todos.

En el Evangelio de hoy escuchamos la parábola del sembrador. Es un recordatorio sencillo pero poderoso de que Dios siempre está actuando, sembrando semillas de gracia en nuestras vidas. Algunas semillas caen en terreno pedregoso, otras entre espinos y algunas en tierra fértil.

In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus’ parable of the sower. It is a simple but powerful reminder that God is always at work, planting seeds of grace in our lives. Some seeds fall on rocky ground, some among thorns, and some on rich soil.

Every Sunday and Solemnity, after listening to the Word of God, we stand and profess our faith together: I believe in one God, the Father almighty … I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God … I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life.

“The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.”

This excerpt from Matthew’s Gospel has become a catchphrase in the modern Church. We give ourselves vertigo with the amount of head-shaking we do over the much-lamented “decline in numbers.”

Este fragmento del Evangelio de Mateo se ha convertido en una frase característica en la Iglesia moderna. Nos provocamos vértigo con la cantidad de movimientos de cabeza que hacemos ante el tan lamentado "descenso de números".¿

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ-Corpus Christi, as it was once known.

From the gospel of John, which we hear this weekend, Jesus tells us: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven...Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day."

Este fin de semana celebramos la Solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo —Corpus Christi, como se la conocía antiguamente—. 

En el Evangelio de San Juan, que escuchamos este fin de semana, Jesús nos dice: «Yo soy el pan vivo que ha bajado del cielo... El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el último día».
