Easter is not just another holiday, not just another time to host a brunch or party, we are celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and as the prayers in a funeral Mass remind us, just as we will share in the death of Jesus, so will we also share in his resurrection. This is why Easter is the biggest and most joyful thing we celebrate in our Catholic faith. This is where the saying “we are Easter people” really comes to life.

La Pascua no es simplemente un día festivo más, no es simplemente otro momento para organizar un almuerzo o una fiesta, estamos celebrando la resurrección de Jesucristo y, como nos recuerdan las oraciones en una misa fúnebre, así como compartiremos la muerte de Jesús, así participaremos también de su resurrección. Es por eso que la Pascua es lo más grande y alegre que celebramos en nuestra fe católica. Aquí es donde realmente cobra vida el dicho “somos gente de Pascua”.

Hemos llegado a la mitad del tiempo de Cuaresma y espero que todos sean perseverantes en sus prácticas cuaresmales de oración y penitencia. Una vez más, los animo que ofrezcan sus oraciones, rosarios, visitas al Santísimo Sacramento, Adoración, intenciones de misa y todos los sacrificios penitenciales por la paz del mundo. Oremos por el fin de la guerra en Tierra Santa, Ucrania y las naciones con problemas en África. Oremos por el fin del terrorismo, las atrocidades, la opresión política y otras injusticias que son pecados contra Dios y la humanidad.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We have arrived at the midpoint of the Lenten season and I hope that all are persevering in their Lenten practices of prayer and penance. Again, I encourage you to offer your prayers, rosaries, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, Adoration, Mass intentions and all penitential sacrifices for peace in this world. We pray for an end to the war in the Holy Land, Ukraine, and the troubled nations of Africa. We pray for an end to terrorism, atrocities, political oppression and other injustices that are sins against God and humanity.

Cada día de este tiempo de Cuaresma nos preparamos para renovar nuestras promesas bautismales, junto con toda la Iglesia, durante el servicio de la Vigilia Pascual en la noche del Sábado Santo. La Semana Santa del tiempo de Cuaresma culmina con la renovación de nuestros votos bautismales durante la Vigilia Pascual o el Día de Pascua. A través de nuestra renovación iluminada y más comprometida de nuestros votos bautismales, recibimos un derramamiento del Espíritu Santo.

Every day of this Lenten season we prepare ourselves to renew our baptismal promises, together with the whole Church, during the Easter vigil service on Holy Saturday night. The Holy week of the Lenten season culminates in the renewal of our baptismal vows during the Easter Vigil or on Easter Day. Through our enlightened and more committed renewal of our baptismal vows we receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Dear friends, we have already walked more than two weeks of our 2024 Lenten walk/desert. And many of us heard the announcement and invitation of the Lord Jesus: “The time has come and the Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15) There has come a time of great importance to stop on the path/life and allow ourselves to be questioned by the Lord about our conduct in life in the face of the proposal of the Kingdom of God. More than talking about the “Kingdom of God/Heavens” is to live it and make it present in every moment of our life project. Living the Kingdom of God is living as Jesus lived. Hence the need for “attentive listening to Jesus himself.”

Queridos amigos, ya hemos caminado más de dos semanas de nuestro caminar/desierto cuaresmal 2024. Y muchos de nosotros escuchamos el anuncio y la invitación del Señor Jesús: “Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca. Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evangelio” (Marcos 1,15) Ha llega un tiempo de gran importancia para hacer un alto en el camino/ vida y dejarnos cuestionar por el Señor, sobre nuestro proceder en la vida de cara a la propuesta del Reino de Dios. Mas que hablar del “Reino de Dios/Cielos” es vivirlo y hacerlo presente en cada momento de nuestro proyecto de vida. Vivir el Reino de Dios es vivir como Jesús vivió. De ahí la necesidad de la “Escucha atenta del mismo Jesús”

On this third Sunday of Lent we look at how the word of God speaks to us through the scriptures, it reminds us of the commandments and how we should behave since he is a jealous God and he knows our thoughts and knows well where we fail in our life. He reminds us how we should behave, so that we can be in grace with him, since he has words of eternal life and in him there is no fault.

En este tercer domingo de cuaresma miramos cómo nos habla la palabra de Dios a través de las escrituras, nos hace un recordatorio de los mandamientos y cómo debemos comportarnos ya que es un Dios celoso y él conoce nuestros pensamientos y sabe bien en que fallamos en nuestra vida. Si él nos recuerda cómo debemos comportarnos, para que podamos estar en gracia con él, ya que él tiene palabras de vida eterna y en él no existe falta alguna.

"Proclamad el mensaje, insistid en él a tiempo y a destiempo, refutad la falsedad, corregid el error, llamad a la obediencia, pero hacedlo todo con paciencia y sana doctrina". (2 Tm 4,2)

El Miércoles de Ceniza nos abre la puerta para cruzar el umbral del tiempo de Cuaresma. Los 40 días pueden considerarse como la estación de: ¡la llamada de atención! Es un tiempo para que reflexionemos sobre cómo nuestros pecados han contribuido a la oscuridad espiritual, no sólo en nuestras propias vidas sino en la de la sociedad.

“Proclaim the message, insist on it in season and out of season, refute falsehood, correct error, call to obedience, but do all with patience and sound doctrine.” (2 Tm 4:2)

Ash Wednesday opens the door for us to cross the threshold into the Lenten Season. The 40 days can be seen as the season of: the wake-up call! It is a time for us to reflect on how our sins have contributed to the spiritual darkness, not only in our own lives but that of society.

Hemos iniciado la cuaresma, tiempo en que se nos invita a profundizar más en los caminos de nuestra conversión, a nivel personal y de comunidad.

La Iglesia define que cuando una persona tiene un encuentro con Jesús ha iniciado un camino de fe y de conversión, ha iniciado un cambio de vida, de corazón y de pensamiento.

La conversión es un retorno a Dios, es el mensaje de Jesús en el Evangelio de este primer domingo de cuaresma “Se ha cumplido el tiempo y el Reino de Dios ya está cerca. Conviértanse y crean en el Evangelio (Marcos 1:15)”.

We have begun Lent, a time in which we are invited to search deeper into the paths of our conversion, on a personal and community level.

The Church defines that when a person has an encounter with Jesus, they have begun a path of faith and conversion, initiated a change of life, heart and thought.

Conversion is a return to God, it is the message of Jesus in the Gospel of this first Sunday of Lent “The time has come and the Kingdom of God is near. Convert and believe in the Gospel (Mark 1:15).”

When we are having a party at home, we take the time to prepare for it. We clean the house, we cook, we do some grocery shopping, and we try our best to make our house look the best possible.

The Church does the same. We always take some time to prepare the feasts. For instance, we take about four weeks to prepare for the birth of Baby Jesus (Advent).

Cuando tenemos una fiesta en casa, nos tomamos el tiempo para prepararla. Limpiamos la casa, cocinamos, hacemos algunas compras y hacemos todo lo posible para que nuestra casa se vea lo mejor posible.

La Iglesia hace lo mismo. Siempre dedicamos tiempo para preparar las fiestas. Por ejemplo, tomamos unas cuatro semanas para prepararnos para el nacimiento del Niño Jesús (Adviento).

¿Pueden creer que ya es febrero del 2024 y que la Cuaresma comienza el 14 de febrero?

Supongo que me estoy haciendo viejo, ya que la gente me dice que cuanto mayor te haces, más rápido pasa el tiempo. P. Sergio ha ido de vacaciones a Colombia desde el 7 de enero; Volveré a la rotación de misas en español e inglés una vez que comience la Cuaresma, porque regresará justo antes del miércoles de Ceniza.

Can you believe it is already February of 2024, and that Lent starts on February 14th?

I guess I am getting old as people tell me the older you get, the faster time goes by. Fr. Sergio has been back in Columbia since January 7th; I will be back in both Spanish and English Mass rotation once Lent begins because he will return just before Ash Wednesday.
