Esta semana oímos hablar del hombre que pregunta a Jesús cómo obtener la vida eterna. Rechaza la invitación de Jesús a vender sus bienes, dar a los pobres y seguir a Jesús. Marcos nos dice esta frase devastadoramente triste: «Al decir esto, se le cayó el semblante y se fue entristecido, porque tenía muchas posesiones» (Marcos 10:22). El corazón de aquel hombre no estaba centrado en Jesús, sino en sus posesiones. Quizá Jesús lo intuyó. Ahora bien, no sabemos si Jesús tenía la intención de obligarle a hacerlo, como cuando Dios llamó a Abraham para que sacrificara a Isaac. Pero, desgraciadamente, en este caso no estaba dispuesto a confiárselo todo a Jesús. Y esto entristeció profundamente al hombre.

This week we hear of the man who inquires of Jesus how to obtain eternal life. He rejects Jesus’ invitation to sell his goods, give to the poor, and follow Jesus. Mark tells us this devastatingly sad line, “At this saying, his countenance fell and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions” (Mark 10:22). The man’s heart wasn’t centered on Jesus, but on his possessions. Perhaps Jesus intuited this. Now, we don’t know if Jesus intended to actually make him go through with it, like God’s call to test Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac. But sadly, in this case the willingness was not there to entrust everything to Jesus. And this made the man deeply sad.

Para este año 2024, el mensaje del Papa Francisco con motivo de la XCVIII Jornada Mundial de las Misiones trae como lema: “Vayan e inviten a todos al banquete” (cf. Mt 22,9) Todo cristiano, desde su bautismo es llamado a ser Discípulo/misionero de Cristo. Y esta es la tarea de la Comunidad Cristiana. Vocación y tarea, es decir, llamado y compromiso de todos a: Primero, tener un “encuentro personal” con el Señor Jesús, el cual nos invita y exhorta a la conversión, a la transformación de la vida. Segundo, después del encuentro se sigue el “seguimiento”, esto es vivir en Cristo como CAMINO, VERDAD Y VIDA. Dicho seguimiento conlleva a un compromiso de cambio y renovación de la vida y de la historia.

For this year 2024, Pope Francis' message for the 18th World Mission Day has the motto: "Go and invite everyone to the banquet" (cf. Mt 22:9). Every Christian, from his baptism, is called to be a Disciple/missionary of Christ. And this is the task of the Christian Community. Vocation and task, that is, the call and commitment of all to: First, have a "personal encounter" with the Lord Jesus, who invites and exhorts us to conversion, to the transformation of life. Second, after the encounter comes the "following", that is, living in Christ as the WAY, TRUTH AND LIFE. Such following entails a commitment to change and renewal of life and history.
